Autumn at Skansen with the Family

There’s always something to experience at Skansen, where the past and present meet, animals and culture, traditions and trends. Autumn is making its presence felt there too. In Skogaholm’s kitchen garden, for example, you can see the 17 different apple varieties growing there. Did you know that Skansen has its own Skansen apple? It grows on the hill above the entrance.

Visit all the animals and/or play in one of Skansen’s playgrounds – Lill-Skansen, Ekorrparken, or Päronparken. At Restaurant Stora Gungan, you can enjoy good food and a beautiful view. The Skansen store has been set up for cozy autumn vibes.

In October, you can also visit the exhibition Vuoi ihán – Sami Contemporary Art. Six different artists showcase their works at the Ekshäradsgården in Skansen.

Opening hours: Weekdays 10:00 AM-3:00 PM / Weekends 10:00 AM-4:00 PM

Transport tip to Skansen – Take the Hop On-Hop Off bus to Skansen and get off at the stop right outside the main entrance. Convenient transport combined with sightseeing around Stockholm city. Strollers can be taken onboard the bus, subject to space availability.

Mushroom Picking – Fun for Both Adults and Kids

Mushroom picking and enjoying nature is a perfect activity for all ages. Grab your mushroom basket, pack a picnic, and head out into the forest in search of nature’s gold.

Sweden is a fantastic country that, thanks to Allemansrätten (the Right of Public Access), allows everyone to go out into nature and freely pick mushrooms and berries. Porcini, funnel chanterelles, birch boletes, saffron milk caps, black trumpet mushrooms, hedgehog mushrooms, slippery jack, cauliflower mushrooms – there are many edible mushrooms. But remember only to pick mushrooms you can identify. For many mushroom pickers, golden chanterelles, funnel chanterelles, and porcini are three favorites that often end up in the basket.

Things to keep in mind: Only pick mushrooms you can identify, bring snacks, mushrooms are best kept in a basket or paper bag, buy a mushroom guidebook, and clean the mushrooms right in the forest.

Tip – Take the Cinderellabåtarna out to the archipelago. M/S Cinderella II stops at several archipelago islands where you can find mushrooms, choose between Vaxholm, Grinda, Gällnö, and Sandhamn.

Autumn at Ulriksdal Palace Garden

Ulriksdal Palace Garden is a calm and pleasant excursion destination for all ages. Here, you can explore the outdoor garden, greenhouse, and garden shop. The shop offers a wide range of spring bulbs and a broad selection of fruit trees and berry bushes, perfect for planting this time of year. The café serves delicious pastries, soups, sandwiches, and a popular vegetarian buffet made with seasonal ingredients. In the open field, you can harvest flowers and vegetables yourself – find your favorite crop. The open field is open until the first frost arrives, so take the opportunity!

Garden Shop opening hours: Weekdays 10:00 AM-6:00 PM / Weekends and holidays 10:00 AM-5:00 PM
Garden Café opening hours: Weekdays 10:00 AM-4:30 PM / Weekends and holidays 11:00 AM-4:30 PM
