One day in Stockholm Sweden

Itinerary for one day in Stockholm

One day can feel short for this magical city, but there’s plenty of time to see and experience the most important things in Stockholm! With this itinerary (please adjust the times if necessary, they’re only suggestions!) you’ll eat well, feel the city’s atmosphere, and visit numerous points of interest.

8:00 AM Breakfast in Old Town

Stockholm’s old town (Gamla stan) dates back to the 13th century and is beautifully preserved. We recommend starting your day at one of the many cozy cafes to feel the Stockholm atmosphere. As you stroll through the charming streets, you'll be surrounded by historic architecture at every turn. Make sure to eat enough so you’ll be energized until lunch.

9:00 AM Explore Old Town and see the Royal Palace

You'll see a lot as you wander the cobblestone streets (in comfortable shoes we hope!). Some of the highlights in Gamla stan are Stortorget, the main square, Stockholm Cathedral (Storkyrkan), and Mårten Trotzigs Street. This street is a perfect photo opportunity to represent Old Town as it is the narrowest street in Stockholm, measuring only 90 centimeters at the most narrow point.

Then wander towards the Royal Palace which is another glimpse of Stockholm's history. Inside there are over 600 rooms across eleven floors with impressive architecture and design. But that’s for another time!

10:00 AM Hop On-Hop Off Bus by the Palace

One of the easiest ways to get around central Stockholm when you’re here for a short visit is the Hop On-Hop Off Bus. You’ll get both the sightseeing and get around town. Here’s the first hop on! Enjoy the tour and sights for about half an hour.

10:30 AM Hop off at Abba Museum

Whatever you choose to do here, Djurgården is one of the gems in Stockholm, it’s part of the National City Park and offers lush greenery in a picturesque island setting with museums and attractions, some of which include;

  • The Vasa Museum: Maritime museum that houses the well-preserved 17th-century warship Vasa
  • ABBA The Museum: Interactive museum to celebrate the iconic pop group
  • Skansen: World’s first open-air museum and zoo
  • Gröna Lund: Amusement Park
  • Junibacken: Children's museum in Stockholm dedicated to the world of Swedish author Astrid Lindgren

Not into museums? Just take a peaceful stroll in nature. There’s a path called Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel's Lovers' Path, designed as a romantic walk but works for anyone who wants to enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Whatever you decide, Djurgården will not disappoint you.

12:00 PM Let’s grab lunch

Consider staying here for lunch, or head to Strandvägen by foot or via the Hop On-Hop Off bus for a delightful lunch cruise. Combine a tasty lunch with sightseeing to make the most of your short time in Stockholm. We recommend our archipelago lunch cruise where the menu showcases classic flavors inspired by the archipelago and traditional Swedish cuisine.

2:00 PM Discover Östermalm

If you stayed at Djurgården, take the bus to Karlaplan and enjoy a walk to Stureplan to explore this exclusive part of Stockholm. If you opted for the lunch cruise, you’re already in the neighborhood. Many of the elegant houses in this area date back to the 19th century, showcasing stunning architecture.

In Östermalm, you can visit the historic Östermalms Saluhall market hall, the beautiful Royal Dramatic Theatre, and the charming Humlegården park. This area is also home to some of Stockholm's most exclusive stores if you’re looking to shop.

3:00 PM Time for a Swedish fika

"Fika" is a cherished Swedish tradition that involves taking a break to enjoy coffee or tea, often accompanied by pastries, cookies, or sandwiches. And when you’re in Sweden, you have to have at least one classic cinnamon bun, made in the swedish way. In the mood for something smaller? A “Dammsugare” is a small pastry made of cookie crumbs, butter, cocoa, and punch liqueur, wrapped in green marzipan and dipped in chocolate. Another great alternative is a piece of princess cake, layers of sponge cake, raspberry jam, vanilla custard, and whipped cream wrapped in green marzipan.

4:00 PM Bus to city hall

Take the hop on-hop off bus to City Hall. The Stockholm City Hall, known as "Stadshuset" in Swedish, is one of the most iconic and beautiful buildings in the city. The outside of the City Hall features red brick walls, elegant arches, and a tall 106-meter tower with three golden crowns on top, symbolizing Sweden. There are great views over the water, and if you’re lucky you’ll get to see a few brides since City Hall is quite a popular place to get married in Stockholm.

7:00 PM Meatballs for Dinner

The Swedish meatballs are iconic for a reason. They’re more than delicious! Typically served with creamy mashed potatoes, lingonberry for that sweet and tart taste sensation, and pickled cucumbers. If you’re in Stockholm, you should try them, no question about it.

The ones at our dinner cruise via Drottningholm are amazing. They’re traditional with all the right condiments and that creamy sauce. This way you’ll have your dinner with beautiful views of scenic Lake Mälaren. Perfect combo.

Enjoy your day in Stockholm and make the most of every moment. We're confident that this city will leave you longing for more…
